It's a fairly handsome beast but it is clearly built for functionality. One large, centrally-located button gives access to the most commonly-used functions and a large clear display window allows at-a-glance monitoring.
It has three recording speeds and an indexing facility so you can mark important parts of recordings for easy location during playback. Couple that with it's integrated loudspeaker, variable playback speeds and easy-to-use buttons and playback is very simple indeed.
A no frills recorder at a great price. Not to be confused with its' little brother the VN5500. The 'PC' at the end of this one's name means files CAN be downloaded to a pc via usb

The Olympus DS-40 is a good
The Olympus DS-40 is a good buy at the moment if you can find one (check out our DS-40 price comparison page) as the model has been superceded by the DS-65.
The DS-40 is a great recorder and has most of the features of the DS-65 but is currently about half the price as retailers are clearing their stocks.
